Set Up Case and Each Picking for a SKU

Configure InfoPlus to allocate and pick full cases before individual units, for a SKU you stock both ways.

Is This What I'm Looking For?

This article covers how to set up InfoPlus to pick full cases before individual eaches, for a SKU you stock both ways, using dedicated case and each locations and a location smart filter. It’s for anyone configuring item records, locations, or fulfillment plans to support case-first picking.

Before You Begin

You'll need access to update the receiving criteria scheme, item records, the Location table, and fulfillment plans.

Steps

  1. Report all inventory under the same SKU. Cases and individual units of an item should share a single SKU. You do not need a separate SKU for the case.
  2. Update the item record. Set Quantity Per Case on the item record to reflect the case quantity you want to pick.
  3. Capture quantity per case at receiving. Update your receiving criteria scheme to record quantity per case on each receipt. This value is a factor in how these items are allocated later.
  4. Create case and each locations. Go to the Location table and create two separate locations for this SKU: one for case quantities and one for each units. Set the Behavior Type on the case location to Forward Case, and the each location to Forward Each.
  5. Create and apply a location smart filter. Create a location smart filter that sorts the case location to be picked from before the each location. Save the smart filter to the fulfillment plan you plan to run on the order.

Billing Considerations

Think about whether you bill by eaches or by picks. Case picking changes what those numbers look like:

  • Billing by picks: a full case pulled from the case location counts as 1 pick, even though it contains multiple units. If your rates are built around per-pick fees, case picking will lower billable pick counts on case-heavy orders.
  • Billing by eaches: every unit is counted individually, whether it shipped as a full case or as loose eaches.

Review your billing rule configuration and check a sample invoice before rolling this out to a customer.

What to Expect

Once set up, allocation will drive picking through the case location first, then the each location. If the pick quantity allows for full cases, InfoPlus will pick those from the case location. Any remaining quantity will be picked from the each location.

To confirm it’s working, place an order that mixes case and each quantities and check that allocation pulls from the case location first. Then pull a sample invoice and confirm the billing output matches your intended fee structure.
